Interesting, useful, relevant...and local! The Central Pennsylvania Section of the IEEE has been providing a professional forum for academia, business, and industry for over 40 years. Recent meeting topics have included the Chandra X-ray telescope, High Performance Routing, Patent Law, the NASA Terrestrial Planet Finder, Broadband Network Management, High Resolution Ultrasonic and X-ray Scanning, Ultra High Reliability Resistors, and many more - all presented by leading researchers and engineers in their respective fields. Please join us at our next meeting (most meetings are the 3rd Thursday of the month, see our schedule). Non-IEEE members are welcome.

Lynn Carpenter retiring
Lynn Carpenter, associate professor of electrical engineering, is retiring on June 30 after more than 35 years of research and teaching at Penn State. Carpenter received his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University in 1964 and his master’s and doctoral degree from the University of Illinois in 1966 and 1971, respectively. Carpenter joined Penn State in 1972 as an assistant professor and is a faculty member with the Communications and Space Sciences Laboratory. His research has included work in ionospheric physics and radar systems. His specialty is microwave system design, monolithic microwave integrated circuits and computer aided design. During sabbatical, Carpenter was appointed as a senior engineer at the Applied Physics Lab’s Space Department at Johns Hopkins University. Carpenter has been an active member of IEEE for a number of years serving many capacities including: chairman of central PA student activities, student branch counselor, Region 2 director, RAB Membership Operations vice-chair and Admissions & Advancement chair. In 2001, he was awarded the IEEE Millenium Medal. A reception for Carpenter will be held on June 26 to honor him on his many years of dedicated service to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Penn State.

Volunteers Needed
The IEEE central Pennsylvania Section needs volunteer officers! If you are interested in volunteering for an officer position, please attend a brief officer meeting immediately following the September 20th meeting (about 5:00) in ee west rm 225. In particular, the section needs a volunteer for the position of Signal Processing Chapter Chairman. The Chapter Chairman conducts (a minimum of two) meetings each year. There is a section budget for these meetings, which can be used to bring in invited guests.
Life Member
The designation "Life Member"is applicable only to a member who has attained the age of 65 years and who has been a member of IEEE or one of its predecessor societies for such a period that the sum of his/her age and his/her years of membership equals or exceeds 100 years. All members having the designation "Life Member" or "Member-for-Life" in the predecessor societies shall be designated as a "Life Member" in the IEEE.
Any member who would have been qualified on or before 31 December 1963 to be a Member-for-Life of AIEE, under the rules of eligibility of AIEE, or to be a Life Member of IRE, under the rules of the IRE, shall be qualified to be a Life Member of IEEE. The Executive Director shall grant Life Membership status to any member who would qualify for Life Membership during the remainder of the transition period prior to 1998 under the previous IEEE Bylaw. Basic dues and assessments are waived for those achieving Life Member status.

The IEEE now has Life Member Chapters. These are chapters comprised (generally) of retired engineers. The Central PA section does not have a Life Member Chapter. If you would be interested in starting a Life Member Chapter locally, please contact Scott Thompson at sdthompson@ieee.org
